Course description

This course is the first part of the introductory sequence. Students acquire Novice Mid-level proficiency in the interpersonal, interpretive, and presentational communicative modes and begin to explore the cultural perspectives, products, and practices of people who speak this language.

Student learning objectives

The SLOs for 101 are consistent with the Novice Mid level of the NCSSFL-ACTFL Can-Do Benchmarks. Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:

Interpersonal communication
  • Communicate on very familiar topics using a variety of words and phrases that they have practiced and memorized.
Presentational speaking
  • Present information about themselves and some other very familiar topics using a variety of words, phrases, and memorized expressions.
Presentational writing
  • Write lists and memorized phrases on familiar topics.
Interpretive listening
  • Recognize some familiar words and phrases when they hear them spoken.
Interpretive reading
  • Recognize some letters or characters.
  • Understand some learned or memorized words and phrases when they read.

Course description

This course is the second part of the introductory sequence. Students reinforce Novice Mid-level proficiency and acquire Novice High-level competence in the interpersonal, interpretive, and presentational communicative modes while continuing to explore the cultural perspectives, products, and practices of people who speak the language.

The SLOs for 102 are consistent with the Novice High level of the NCSSFL-ACTFL Can-Do Benchmarks. Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:

Interpersonal communication
  • Communicate and exchange information about familiar topics using phrases and simple sentences, sometimes supported by memorized language.
  • Handle short social interactions in everyday situations by asking and answering simple questions.
Presentational speaking
  • Present basic information on familiar topics using language they have practiced using phrases and simple sentences.
Presentational writing
  • Write short messages and notes on familiar topics related to everyday life.
Interpretive listening
  • Understand words, phrases, and simple sentences related to everyday life.
  • Recognize pieces of information and sometimes understand the main topic of what is being said.
Interpretive reading
  • Understand familiar words, phrases, and sentences within short and simple texts related to everyday life.
  • Understand the main idea of what they have read.
